Furniture groups, courtyards, fire escapes, alleyways, and rooftops have played pivotal roles in shaping the cultural landscape in the South Bronx neighborhood into avant-garde hip-hop and mambo scenes.
This collective housing proposal harnesses the versatility of these interstitial spaces as design instruments to socialize domestic activities, resulting in a rich tapestry of interconnected zones.
A towering, affordable pre-fab concrete stack accumulates on the northeast to provide affordable housing with clear views and privacy. It gradually transforms into low-rise, deeper floor plates on the south, offering public amenities such as theaters, galleries, and tenant spaces for the neighborhood and the city, enriching and responding to the urban fabric of NYC—a city with 1,000 parks.
