In mechanical time, people live strictly by the clock: they rise at 7, lunch at noon, supper at 6, work 40 hours a week, make love between 9–10 pm, and read the Sunday newspaper on Sunday. In body time, life flows freely: people eat when hungry, sleep when tired, start working when inspired, and make love any hour of the day. Inspired by Alan Lightman’s novel, this chapel explores the interplay between these two experiences of time. Using conflict as a design catalyst, the project proposes a system of alternative architectural expressions that support a collective and enriching lifestyle.
