“City-owned land represents an infrastructure in NYC that exists at least partially outside of the market where capitalism itself doesn’t alone describe demands.” – Jaffer Kolb
By marrying NYC’s transportation and education departments, Guts of the City proposes a geological excavation under Washington Heights’ streets, connecting the subway stations while turning water, electricity, steam, and drainage pipes underground into educational tools. Dome-shaped extracurricular programs are formed by the tensions of utility pipes and the clearance of retaining walls.
